How to Choose the Right Saatva Mattress for the Way You Sleep

You know the mattress is done when you start sleeping around it. There’s a dip on your side that you roll into, a spot near the edge you avoid, and a habit of waking up on the couch because it somehow felt better at 2 a.m. Most people put up with it for years because shopping for a replacement feels like a maze of foam names.

It gets a lot simpler once you know which type of mattress you’re after. There are really only four main kinds worth comparing, and each one suits a different kind of sleeper. Pick the type first and the brand and model decision shrinks to a short list.

Who should be shopping right now

If you wake up stiffer than you went to bed, if you and your partner keep rolling toward the middle, or if you can feel individual springs, your mattress is telling you something. A new partner or a switch from back to side sleeping is reason enough to rethink it too.

The four types, and who each one suits

Innerspring and coil hybrids. Steel coils do the supporting and a comfort layer on top (foam, latex or a pillow top) handles the cushioning. You get bounce, airflow between the coils and an easy feel for getting in and out of bed. Back and stomach sleepers, and anyone who dislikes feeling stuck in a mattress, tend to gravitate here.

Latex. Latex foam is springy rather than slow. It contours without the sinking sensation people associate with memory foam, and natural latex has a reputation for sleeping on the cool side. It’s a strong pick for combination sleepers who change position through the night.

Memory foam. This is the hug. Memory foam molds around shoulders and hips, which is why side sleepers love it, and it does a good job of keeping one partner’s movement from reaching the other.

Adjustable air. Air chambers let you change the firmness with a remote. For couples who can’t agree on soft versus firm, or for anyone whose preferences shift over time, it settles the argument without a compromise mattress in the middle.

What to look for before you buy

Start with firmness, and treat it as a function of your sleep position and your weight rather than a matter of taste. Side sleepers usually want something softer so the shoulder and hip can sink in a bit. Stomach sleepers usually want firmer so the hips don’t drop. Body weight shifts the feel too: the same bed tends to feel firmer to a lighter person and softer to a heavier one. Look for brands that publish who each firmness level is meant for.

Edge support matters more than it sounds. If you sit on the side of the bed to put on socks, or if two of you share a queen, a firm perimeter makes the whole surface usable.

Then there’s delivery. A heavy hybrid is a two-person job up a staircase, and the old mattress still has to go somewhere, so check setup terms as closely as the layers inside.

Where Saatva’s lineup fits

Saatva sells online and covers all four types, which makes it a useful place to shop once you’ve picked a category. Here’s how its main models line up, in the company’s own words.

The Saatva Classic is the brand’s flagship innerspring, which Saatva calls its most popular mattress. It uses a dual-coil design with more than 1,000 recycled steel coils in full size and up, a 3-inch Euro pillow top and what Saatva calls its patented Lumbar Zone technology. It comes in three firmness levels: Plush Soft, which Saatva says is best for side sleepers and lighter sleepers; Luxury Firm, which it describes as ideal for all sleep positions; and Firm, aimed at stomach sleepers and heavier sleepers. It comes in 11.5-inch and 14.5-inch heights.

The Saatva HD is the hybrid Saatva built for bigger bodies, engineered, it says, to support sleepers up to 500 pounds.

For latex, the Saatva Latex Hybrid pairs a five-zone natural latex layer (Saatva says it’s GOLS-certified organic) with individually wrapped coils at a medium-firm feel the company says suits all positions, especially back and stomach sleepers. The all-latex Zenhaven is flippable, with a Luxury Plush side Saatva recommends for side sleepers and a Gentle Firm side for stomach sleepers and anyone who likes a firm bed.

Memory foam fans have two options. The Memory Foam Hybrid sets memory foam over wrapped comfort coils, and the all-foam Contour5 uses high-density memory foam that Saatva says hugs the body without letting the hips sink too far. The company recommends both mainly for side sleepers.

The Solaire is the adjustable-air model, with 50 firmness settings on each side in queen and larger, controlled by a wireless remote. Saatva pitches it at couples with different firmness preferences.

And the Saatva Rx is a plush model that Saatva says it designed for sleepers with chronic back and joint conditions. If that describes you, it’s the one to read up on first.

The delivery part, handled

This is where Saatva earns a lot of its fans. The company says every mattress comes with free white glove delivery: a crew carries it in and sets it up in the room you choose. Check the “free mattress & foundation removal” box at checkout and they take the old one away too, according to Saatva. Mattresses are made to order, and Saatva estimates delivery at roughly 9 to 21 days, with a local partner calling the day before to confirm a four-hour window.

Behind that sits a 365-night home trial and what Saatva calls a lifetime warranty for the original owner. Under its published warranty terms, the mattress is replaced free in years one and two, and from year three on Saatva repairs and re-covers it for a processing fee. Solaire has its own parts-and-labor schedule, so read that one separately.

Sleep on the right type, not just a newer one

Swapping a tired mattress for a fresh copy of the same wrong type is the most common way people end up shopping again in a few years. The better move is to match the construction to how you sleep, pick the firmness for your position and weight, and let someone else carry it up the stairs. Prices change with sales, so check current prices on the model and size you want before you decide.
