Thorne Magnesium Bisglycinate: Form, Dose and the Scoop-Size Confusion
Thorne’s magnesium bisglycinate powder delivers 200 mg of elemental magnesium per scoop, from a two-ingredient formula, and it is NSF Certified for Sport — which we confirmed in NSF’s own database rather than taking from the box.

Label facts
- Magnesium (as magnesium bisglycinate): 200 mg elemental, 48% DV
- Serving size: 1 scoop (3.11 g), 60 servings per 187 g jar
- Other ingredients: citric acid, monk fruit concentrate — nothing else
- A 30-count stick-pack format also exists at 3.8 g per stick, same 200 mg elemental magnesium
- Calories and total carbohydrate per serving: not rendered on the panels we could read
The 200 mg is elemental, not compound weight
This is the detail that makes cross-brand comparison hard. Thorne prints 200 mg as elemental magnesium at 48% of the daily value. Some brands print the weight of the whole magnesium compound instead, which produces a much larger and much less meaningful number on the front of the tub.
A discrepancy worth flagging
NSF’s database, Target and iHerb all record the scoop as 3.11 g. One retailer, thefeed.com, states 4 g. We are going with the NSF-listed figure, since that is the one tied to the certification record — but if you are measuring by scoop rather than by weight, the difference is real.
On the price
Thorne’s own site renders prices with JavaScript and we could not read one, so we cannot quote a manufacturer MSRP. Two independent retailers both listed $52.00 for the 6.5 oz / 187 g, 60-serving jar — about 87 cents a serving.
An earlier version of this page said $42. No source we checked supports that figure, so we have removed it rather than leave it standing.
What the certification covers
NSF Certified for Sport listing 1205063 records the product as “Thorne® Magnesium Bisglycinate”, brand Thorne, mineral powder, unflavoured, package size 187 g, serving 1 scoop (3.11 g), free of gluten, sold in the United States. That programme tests for banned substances and verifies label accuracy — it is the strongest third-party mark in this category.
