A Thin Credit File Is Not the Same as Bad Credit. Upstart Was Built on That Idea.

For most of the history of consumer lending, one number decided whether you got a loan and what it cost: your credit score. That works well for people with long, tidy credit histories. It works badly for recent graduates, people who moved countries, gig workers and anyone who simply never borrowed much. They can be perfectly reliable and still look like a risk on paper.

Upstart was built around that gap. It is worth understanding how it works before you check a rate, because the way it decides is different from a bank, and so are the things to watch.

What Upstart is

Upstart was founded in 2012 by former Google executives and is based in San Mateo, California. It is listed on the Nasdaq. It is not a traditional bank: it runs a lending platform that partners with banks and credit unions, which fund the loans, while Upstart’s model decides who qualifies and at what rate.

That model looks beyond the credit score. Upstart says it weighs thousands of variables, including education, employment history and income, to estimate how likely someone is to repay. The company’s case is that this lets it approve more borrowers than a score-based approach, particularly people with thin credit files.

How the process works

  1. Check your rate. Upstart says this uses a soft credit inquiry, which does not affect your credit score. You see what you may be offered before committing.
  2. Apply if you want to go ahead. Accepting an offer and applying triggers a hard inquiry, which can lower your score slightly, as with any loan application.
  3. Verification and funding. Upstart may ask for documents to confirm income or identity. It says approved loans can be funded as soon as the next business day.

Personal loans come with three- or five-year terms, and there is no penalty for paying the loan off early.

The costs to read carefully

The headline APR is only part of the price. The item people most often miss is the origination fee, which on Upstart loans can reach up to 12% of the loan amount and is deducted before the money reaches you. Borrow a set amount and you may receive noticeably less.

  • Compare the APR, not the interest rate. The APR includes the origination fee, so it is the fairer number for comparing lenders.
  • Work out what you actually receive. If you need a specific sum, account for the fee when choosing the loan amount.
  • Know the late-fee terms. Missed payments cost money and damage your credit. Set up automatic payments if you can.

Rates depend on your circumstances and can be high for riskier profiles. Check the current range and terms on Upstart’s site, and read your loan agreement before you sign.

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

Upstart tends to make most sense for people with a limited credit history but steady income, such as recent graduates or those who are early in their careers, who might be turned down or overcharged elsewhere.

It is less likely to be the best deal if:

  • Your credit is already excellent. Banks and credit unions may offer lower rates with no origination fee at all. Check them first.
  • You need the money for something that can wait. Saving for a few months costs nothing in interest.
  • You are borrowing to cover everyday bills. A loan can make a short-term squeeze worse. A free, nonprofit credit counselor can help you look at the whole picture first.

Whatever you decide, check your rate with more than one lender. Soft-inquiry rate checks are now common, so comparing offers costs you nothing but a few minutes. This article is general information, not financial advice.
