Patagonia Better Sweater: Fair Trade, Recycled Polyester, and Why Men’s and Women’s Differ
The Better Sweater Fleece Jacket is $169 in both the men’s and women’s versions. They are not the same garment — different fit, different care instruction, different country of manufacture — which is a detail most write-ups flatten into one spec box.
★ Verified at a glance

A price correction
This page previously said $139. Patagonia currently publishes $169 for both versions. We have corrected it.
Where the two versions diverge
- Fit. Women’s is a slim fit with princess seams at the back and forward seams at the front for a contoured shape. Men’s is a regular fit.
- Care. Women’s: machine wash cold. Men’s: machine wash warm. Both: do not bleach, tumble dry low, do not iron.
- Made in. Women’s in Sri Lanka, men’s in Thailand.
- Sizes. Women’s XS–XXL; men’s XXS–3XL.
- Fabric weight. The women’s page specifies a 10 oz fleece body and 5.3 oz brushed tricot trim; the men’s page states the composition without the weights.
What the certifications mean here
Fair Trade Certified applies to the factory: a premium is paid on top of the cost of the garment, which workers at that facility decide how to use. bluesign approved applies to the fabrics: it is a chemical and environmental standard for textile inputs.
Both are third-party programmes rather than self-declarations, which is what separates them from most “sustainable” language on a product page.
The recycled polyester claim
100% recycled polyester throughout — body, trim and pocket bags. The men’s page adds that it is dyed with a low-impact process that reduces dyestuff, energy and water use compared with conventional heather dyeing.
The honest downside
Patagonia’s own guidance states that knitted garments are prone to pilling, and recommends a sweater stone. This is a knit fleece with a sweater-like face; it will pill at the cuffs and where a pack strap sits, and the brand does not pretend otherwise.
The men’s features list — full zip, stand-up collar, two zippered handwarmer pockets, one vertical zippered chest pocket, flat-seam construction — is the practical spec worth checking against what you actually want from a mid-layer.
