Levi’s 501 Original Fit: Rigid Denim, Real Measurements and the Shrink-to-Fit Trap

Close-up of folded blue denim jeans

The 501 Original is 100% cotton with no elastane — Levi’s labels it non-stretch, and that single fact governs everything about how it fits, how it wears in, and why sizing advice for it does not transfer from any other pair of jeans you own.

★ Men’s 501 Original, as published

  • $84.95 list · $59.99 current selling price on levi.com
  • 100% cotton, non-stretch
  • Waist 24–44 · Length 29–36
  • Size 32 measurements: front rise 11¼”, knee 17½”, leg opening 16″
  • Made in Egypt, Mexico and Pakistan

A price correction

This page previously said $98. Levi’s list price is $84.95 and the current marked price is $59.99. We checked the men’s 501 Original; if you are shopping the women’s cut, the fit measurements below will differ and should be read from that product page.

What “non-stretch” actually costs you

There is no elastane and therefore no recovery. The jeans will feel tight when you put them on cold, loosen across the first hour of wear, and never spring back the way a 2% elastane jean does. Sizing up “for comfort” in a 501 usually produces a waistband that gapes by lunchtime.

The trade is that rigid denim holds a shape, fades where you actually move, and lasts — which is the entire reason the 501 is still the reference point after a century.

Published measurements, size 32

  • Front rise: 11¼ inches
  • Knee: 17½ inches
  • Leg opening: 16 inches
  • Cut: regular through the thigh, sits at the waist, straight leg
  • Button fly, five-pocket construction

The Shrink-to-Fit distinction

Levi’s sells more than one 501. Alongside the standard 501 Original there is a 501 Original Shrink-to-Fit, a 501 Original Selvedge Shrink-to-Fit at $150, and a 501 Original Thermadapt at $110–$120.

Shrink-to-Fit is raw, unsanforised denim that shrinks substantially on first wash. It is not a variant you buy in your usual size, and confusing it with the standard 501 is the single most common sizing mistake with this jean. Check which one you are looking at before you order.

Care, as printed

Machine wash cold, do not bleach, tumble dry medium, hot iron if needed, dry cleaning possible, and wash inside out with like colours.

That last instruction is not decorative. Indigo on rigid denim transfers — onto pale upholstery, onto white trainers, onto the inside of a light-coloured bag. Expect it for the first several washes.
