Crème de la Mer: What the Price Actually Buys, and a Correction

La Mer’s Moisturizing Cream is sold in four sizes from $100 to $645. None of them costs $345 — an earlier version of this page carried that figure, and it appears to have come from a different product entirely.

The correction first

This page previously listed $345. La Mer publishes no size at that price. $345 is the current price of The Day & Night Duet, a separate set — the most likely source of the error.

We are stating it openly rather than quietly editing the number, because a wrong price on a $600 product is not a rounding error.

What is in it, as published

The centrepiece is Miracle Broth, which La Mer describes as a cell-renewing elixir made from sea kelp, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, undergoing three to four months of fermentation with exposure to light and sound waves. There is also an exclusive Lime Tea, described as a proprietary antioxidant.

The published ingredient list also includes algae extract, mineral oil, petrolatum, glycerin, sesame seed oil and eucalyptus leaf oil. Mineral oil and petrolatum sit prominently in that list — worth knowing if you had understood this as a purely marine and botanical formula.

La Mer publishes no concentrations for any ingredient.

The manufacturing claims

• “Each jar must be filled within 8 hours to maintain its delicate balance”
• Liquid Crystal Technology, described as protecting the Miracle Broth within the cream
• Formulated without parabens or phthalates

How La Mer says to use it

Take a small amount with the spatula, warm it between your fingertips until it turns translucent to release the Miracle Broth, then press it into the face and neck, morning and night.

This is not incidental. La Mer treats the warming step as part of the product working, and the cream is dispensed with a spatula rather than scooped. If you use it like an ordinary moisturiser, you are not using it as directed.

The efficacy claims, attributed

La Mer publishes two: that it improves the skin’s barrier resilience by 81% in two weeks, and that it begins to repair the look of forehead lines in four weeks. These are the brand’s own claims from its own testing. We have not seen the study protocols, and we are not presenting them as independent findings.

Who it is for

La Mer positions it as an ultra-rich cream for drier skin. At $200 for a single ounce, the honest framing is that this is a luxury purchase where the ritual, the texture and the jar are part of what you are buying. If your interest is purely in barrier repair per dollar, that is a different shopping list.
