Netflix Premium: Who Actually Needs the $26.99 Tier
Netflix Premium is $26.99 a month — the only tier with 4K, the only one allowing four simultaneous streams, and the only one that supports two paid extra members. Most of the reasons to buy it have nothing to do with picture quality.

The three things it unlocks
- Four simultaneous streams instead of two. For most households that buy this tier, this is the actual reason.
- 4K Ultra HD with HDR. Standard and Standard with ads both stop at 1080p.
- Downloads on six devices, up to 100 active downloads each, against two devices on the tiers below.
4K comes with conditions
Netflix documents that 4K playback requires a supporting device, an HDCP 2.2 or better connection, playback quality set to Auto or High, and a connection of at least 15 Mbps. Where your setup falls short, Netflix quietly serves the highest quality it can and does not tell you.
This matters because “I pay for 4K” and “I am receiving 4K” are not the same statement, and a surprising number of people paying the premium are watching 1080p on a cable or a device that cannot carry more.
The extra-member maths
Premium allows two extra members at $9.99 each. Standard allows one. The ads plan allows none. If you are splitting a subscription across households, $26.99 plus two members at $9.99 covers three homes for about $15.66 each — which is the calculation that makes this tier look reasonable rather than expensive.
Where the downloads are still limited
Six devices and 100 active downloads each is generous, but not unlimited. Some titles cap how many times they can be downloaded per year, some cannot be downloaded at all, and everything you have downloaded is deleted if you cancel.
Skip it if
You watch on one or two screens, you do not have a 4K display and an HDR-capable chain to feed it, and you are not sharing with another household. In that case Standard at $19.99 gives you the same catalogue and the same ad-free experience for $7 less.
