What Best Buy Is Actually Best At

There is one thing an online-only shop still cannot do for you. It cannot let you put your hand on the weight of a vacuum before you commit to pushing it around for the next eight years.

Best Buy can. And then it can have the thing in your car the same afternoon, send somebody to fit it, cover it for three years, and take it back across a counter if you change your mind.

That is a real set of advantages, and most people use about a third of them.

The categories where the aisles earn their keep

Vacuums and floor care. Shark and Ninja upright and cordless models, Bissell carpet cleaners. These are products you judge with your hands โ€” the balance, the reach, how heavy it feels at the top of a staircase. A photograph tells you none of it.

Coffee machines. De’Longhi’s range runs from simple to seriously involved, and the difference between a machine you use daily and one you resent is mostly ergonomics. Standing in front of them sorts it out in ten minutes.

Televisions. Hisense have become one of the strongest value propositions in large screens, and a panel is the classic case for seeing it lit before you buy. Brightness and viewing angle look nothing like the spec sheet suggests.

Video doorbells and smart home. Ring, plus the accessories that make a system work. Installation help is available here in a way it is not when a box simply arrives.

Major appliances. Washers, refrigerators, ranges. Delivery, installation and haul-away of the old unit are part of the purchase, and that service is worth more than any discount a listing site can offer you.

The protection plan is the part people underrate

On Best Buy’s own stock you can add Geek Squad Protection or Best Buy Protection at the point of purchase, and AppleCare+ or SamsungCare+ where the product qualifies.

The value is not really the repair. It is that the decision is settled. A cordless vacuum that lives in a cupboard with children and a dog is going to have an incident, and the difference between a covered incident and an uncovered one is the difference between a phone call and a replacement purchase.

This matters most on the things that move, get carried, or sit where they can be knocked over. Floor care, laptops, tablets, anything with a screen.

The Price Match Guarantee lets you stop refreshing

Best Buy runs a Price Match Guarantee on its own items, in stores and online.

The practical effect is that you can buy the thing today instead of watching it for three weeks. That is worth something on its own โ€” most people who wait for a better price end up either paying the same later or missing the model they wanted.

It also means a sale you spot elsewhere does not turn into a reason to abandon a purchase you had already thought through.

Same day, and a counter you can walk back into

Store pickup, curbside and locker collection are available on Best Buy’s own stock, which turns an order into an errand rather than a wait. Same-day delivery is offered in many areas.

And the return is a person, not a process. Handing a box to somebody standing behind a desk and getting a receipt takes four minutes. Arranging a courier, printing a label and waiting for a refund to be acknowledged takes a fortnight of low-grade irritation.

For anything you are even slightly unsure about โ€” a size, a fit, whether the colour works in the room โ€” that counter is the reason to buy here.

Rewards on top of all of it

My Best Buy rewards earn across the catalogue, including on marketplace items, and bonus reward promotions run through the year. If you are buying an appliance and its accessories in the same month, that is worth checking before you split the order across two shops.

One line to check, so you get all of it

Best Buy also lists stock from outside sellers, and those listings sit in the same search results. They are useful, but they do not carry the things above.

Directly over the Add to cart button, every product page says either Sold by Best Buy or Sold & shipped by a seller’s name. The first is the one that comes with the protection plans, the price match, the pickup options and the counter.

So on anything where those matter โ€” an appliance, a television, a laptop, a vacuum โ€” glance at that line and pick the listing that says Best Buy. It takes three seconds and it is the difference between a purchase with a service behind it and a parcel.

Where the outside sellers are the right call

They are very handy for the long tail. The obsolete cable, the replacement filter, the lens adapter nobody stocks, a model that left the main catalogue two years ago. On a small accessory you were never going to insure or price match anyway, a marketplace listing is a good outcome rather than a compromise.

Worth the trip, and worth the tab

Buying online is better than it has ever been at the things it is good at โ€” price, choice, convenience on a known quantity. It has not got any better at letting you hold a thing before you own it, or at fixing it afterwards.

Best Buy’s whole proposition is that second list. Aisles you can walk, plans you can add, a van that arrives with two people and takes the old fridge away, and somebody behind a desk when it goes wrong.

On a vacuum, a coffee machine, a television or an appliance, that is what you are actually buying, and it is worth paying a little for.
